Charles Earland - Jazz Organ Summit

photo(2).jpg (4825 bytes)Four of our American masters, each contributing their own message, create a collage of music that climaxes into a spectacular array of energy. The dignity of jazz organ is represented in Johnny "Hammond" Smith's painfully soulful ballads. Dr. Lonnie Smith brings forth layers of unpredictable beauty from the organ. Jimmy McGriff relentlessly grooves through the blues as only he can do. And Charles Earland reveals the undeniable dance rhythms of jazz organ in signature fashion before igniting this foursome in an organ jam which will burn forever...

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Recorded live at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago and chronicled in a four-page spread in the October 1997 issue of Down Beat magazine
  • The Hammond B-3 organ is back in fashion, and organ players are once again making a splash at festivals, on the radio and in CD bins at posh clubs across the globe... This recording both preserves and makes history, with its four-organ lineup - as well as being the swan song and final performance for Johnny "Hammond" Smith
  • Charles Earland's danceable rhythms and relentless grooves were developed on over 50 recordings; sidework for such artists as Lou Donaldson, Lee Morgan, Melvin Sparks, Grover Washington Jr. and more!
  • Dr. Lonnie Smith's unpredictable grooves and funky stylings grew out of sessions with Lou Donaldson, Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington Jr., and George Benson
  • Johnny "Hammond" Smith's tasteful chops and ballads were born out of the '50s and '60s where he toured with George Benson, Oliver Nelson, Arthur Taylor, Houston Person and many, many more; recorded more than 50 albums and had a hit with his version of "Summertime" in 1959 with Chris Columbo
  • Jimmy McGriff's blues-based grooves and churchy riffs evolved out of his '60s blues-organ combo and even a stint with the big band of Buddy Rich in '69. Jimmy has completed an estimated 83 recordings!
