Melvin Sparks
Call it soul jazz, old school acid jazz, barbecue jazz - whatever, Texas-born guitarist Melvin Sparks
was the unsung hero behind landmark, genre defining records such as Charles Earland's Black Talk! and Lou Donaldson's Everything I Play Is Funky. With old school back in school these days, the time is right
for a new Sparks recording. I'm A Gittar Player is the real deal, nine songs full of his instantly recognizable uptown-meets-lowdown blues-meets- jazz style. Sparks has crafted a CD that's both contemporary
and a trip back to the days when jazz, funk, soul and blues were all cooking in the same pot. It's Melvin Sparks like Melvin Sparks always wanted to sound - an absolute master axeman at the top of his game.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Features Idris Muhammed on drums, Pucho on timbales, Stanley Banks (George Benson) on Fender bass, Ron Levy on the Hammond B-3 organ, Steve Kroon (Luther Vandross) on percussion, Danny
Mixon (Dizzy Gillespie) on piano, and Fred McFarlane (Madonna) on electric piano.
